Most Plumbing Problems Are Older Than the Day You Noticed Them
Water is patient. A joint that has been weeping a drop an hour for two years does not announce itself until the drywall finally gives up, and by then the question is no longer the joint — it is the cabinet base, the subfloor and whatever grew in between. This is why plumbing work has such a reputation for escalating: the visible fault is frequently the last event in a long sequence.
What that means in practice is that the assessment is worth more than the repair. Anyone can replace a section of pipe. The part that saves you money is working out whether that section failed on its own or is the first of several, and whether what soaked into the floor needs dealing with before it is closed back up.

Leaks and water lines
Finding them, reaching them with the least demolition we can manage, and repairing or replacing the run depending on what condition the rest of it is in.
Drains that will not clear
Kitchen, bathroom and main lines. A drain that blocks repeatedly in the same place is telling you something about slope, roots or a fitting, not about what went down it.
Water pressure and flow
Poor pressure at one fixture is a different problem from poor pressure everywhere. We work out which you have before anyone suggests a pump.
Fixtures and faucets
Taps, toilets, sinks, tubs and shut-off valves — replaced properly, including the valve behind it that has seized open since 1998.
Bathroom and kitchen renovations
The rough-in side of a remodel. Involve us while the layout is still a drawing and you will spend less on it.
Seasonal shutdowns and openings
Draining down a lake property for winter and commissioning it in spring, done as a job rather than as a hurried favour before the long weekend.
Worth a Call Sooner Rather Than Later
None of these are emergencies on their own. All of them are cheaper to deal with in the month you notice them than in the month after that.
- A water bill that climbed with no change in how you use water
- A tap or toilet that runs on quietly after it should have stopped
- Damp, staining or a soft patch on a floor or ceiling with no obvious source
- A drain that clears when you plunge it and blocks again a fortnight later
- Banging or hammering in the pipes when a tap shuts off
- Water pressure that has dropped gradually over a year or two
- A shut-off valve you tried to turn and could not
- Water that runs discoloured after the house has stood empty for a few days
What Decides the Cost
We do not publish price ranges for plumbing repairs, because a range wide enough to cover both a seized shut-off valve and a failed main line is a range that tells you nothing. What we can do is be straight about what moves the number, so that when you get a figure you can see where it came from.
You get the number before the work, in writing, and if what we find once it is open changes the job, you hear about it then rather than on the invoice.
- How hard the fault is to reach — accessible basement run, or behind finished wall and tile
- Whether the failed section is isolated or the whole run is the same age and condition
- Whether there is water damage underneath that has to be addressed before closing up
- Materials, and whether the existing pipework can be joined to or has to be transitioned

We look for the cause
A drain that blocks in the same spot every few weeks does not have a blockage problem. Clearing it again and leaving is billable and useless.
Least demolition that works
There is usually more than one way to reach a pipe. We would rather spend twenty minutes working out the least destructive one than open a wall because it was quicker for us.
We tell you what we left
If we repaired one joint on a run where three more look the same age, you will hear about the other three — not as a sales pitch, as information you need for next year.

Which is not always where the water is appearing. Water travels along joists and surfaces before it comes through a ceiling.

Repair, replace the run, or leave it and monitor. If one of those is clearly wrong we will say which and why.

Plumbing Questions
Where is my main water shut-off?
In most Central Alberta houses it is in the basement or a mechanical room, on the wall nearest the street, usually close to the water meter. It is worth finding it on a calm afternoon and making sure it actually turns, rather than discovering at 2am that it has seized. If yours will not move, that is a small job now and a serious problem later.
Can you find a leak without opening the wall?
Often, yes. Where the water shows up is rarely where it comes from, so the first step is narrowing it down by isolating sections, checking the meter with everything off, and reading the damage pattern. Some leaks still end up needing access, but we would rather open one small area we are confident about than three exploratory ones.
Are chemical drain cleaners a problem?
They are hard on older pipework and on the seals in traps, and they rarely solve a drain that keeps re-blocking, because the cause is usually the shape or condition of the line rather than the material sitting in it. They also make the job less pleasant and slightly more hazardous for whoever opens that drain next. Mechanical clearing is kinder to the pipe.
Is Poly-B a problem I should worry about?
It was used widely in houses of a certain era across this region, and whether it needs replacing depends on its condition, the fittings used, and what your insurer says about it — some take a firm position. It is not automatically an emergency, but it is worth knowing whether you have it and what state it is in, rather than finding out during a failure.
