New Does Not Mean Nothing Goes Wrong
Blackfalds has grown quickly, and most of its housing is recent. That changes what we get called about. There is far less of the corroded-pipework work that fills the day in an older town, and considerably more of a different category: things that were installed to a schedule, signed off, and have been quietly not quite right ever since.
Undersized duct runs to a bonus room. A bathroom that was plumbed correctly but vented marginally. Heating balanced for a house before the basement got developed, and never rebalanced afterwards. None of it is dramatic, and all of it is the kind of thing a household learns to live with — usually by keeping one door shut and one room's vent closed.
There is also a practical point about new houses worth knowing: some of what goes wrong in the first years is a warranty matter rather than a repair you should be paying for. Where we think that applies, we will say so, even though it means we are talking ourselves out of the job.

My house is only a few years old. Should something be going wrong already?
Some things, yes. New houses settle, and installations done to a tight schedule sometimes get finished rather than perfected. What is worth checking is whether it falls under your builder's warranty before you pay anyone — including us — to fix it. We will tell you when we think it does.
We are developing the basement. When should we call you?
Before the framing, ideally while the layout is still being drawn. Where the drains, vents and heating runs can go decides what is possible and what it costs, and that is far easier to accommodate on a drawing than after the walls are up. An hour early has saved people a great deal.
The upstairs got cold after we finished the basement. Why?
Because the heating system is now serving more space than it was balanced for, and the newly developed area is generally at the easy end of the ductwork. Air takes the path of least resistance, so the new space gets plenty and the far end of the system upstairs gets less. It is usually a balancing job rather than an equipment one.
