Working At SylvanLake Plumbers

A small crew covering plumbing, heating and HVAC across Central Alberta. Openings come and go with the work, so this page is worth reading even when nothing is posted.

What Actually Matters Here

  • You can explain a fault to a homeowner. Most of this job is standing in somebody's basement translating what you found into language they can repeat to their partner that evening. That is a core skill here, not a soft one.
  • You turn up when you said you would. A crew this size has nowhere to absorb a no-show. Being where you said at the time you said counts for more here than any single line on a resume.
  • You will say when something is wrong. Including when it is our own work, and including to a customer who would rather not hear it. Quietly closing a wall over something you know is not right is the one habit that does not survive here.
  • You do not sell what is not needed. If a unit has years left, the customer gets told it has years left. Anyone whose instinct runs the other way will be unhappy working here.
  • Safety is not a paperwork exercise. Gas appliances and water in occupied buildings. Doing it properly is the job, not an overhead on top of the job.

Experience in plumbing, heating or HVAC helps. If you have the temperament and not the experience yet, say so — that is a training problem, and training problems are solvable. Attitude is not.

Roles We Hire Into

Nothing may be posted today. These are the positions this crew hires into when the work supports one, and an introduction sitting on file beats being one of forty applications later.

Journeyman Plumber

Residential and small commercial plumbing service across Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Blackfalds and Lacombe — diagnosis, repairs, replacements and renovation work.

What it needs

  • Journeyman plumbing qualification, or equivalent experience on service work
  • Strong diagnostic instincts, particularly where the fault is not where the symptom is
  • Able to explain findings to a homeowner without jargon or condescension
  • Valid driver's licence and a clean record

What you get

  • Varied residential and small commercial work rather than one repetitive contract
  • A small crew with no layers between you and the person making decisions
  • Exposure to plumbing, heating and HVAC rather than one narrow lane
  • Straightforward workplace where saying a job is not right is expected

HVAC / Heating Technician

Furnaces, boilers, heat pumps and ductwork — service, diagnosis and installation across the same service area.

What it needs

  • Experience with gas heating appliances and forced-air systems
  • Comfortable diagnosing distribution and airflow problems, not only appliance faults
  • Methodical approach to combustion and safety checks
  • Good communication with customers on site

What you get

  • Real variety — hydronic, forced air and heat pumps rather than one system type
  • Local service area, so days are not spent driving across the province
  • Work alongside the plumbing side rather than in a separate silo
  • Scope to shape how the heating side of the business runs

Apprentice

Working alongside the crew on plumbing and heating service while progressing through an apprenticeship.

What it needs

  • Registered in, or ready to register in, an applicable apprenticeship programme
  • Reliable attendance and a genuine willingness to learn the trade properly
  • Comfortable being in customers' homes and behaving accordingly
  • Physically up to the work, which is not always in convenient places

What you get

  • Mentorship from people still on the tools every day
  • Breadth across plumbing, heating and HVAC early on
  • Real work rather than fetching and carrying
  • A small crew, so you are not the fourth apprentice nobody has time for

Service Coordinator

Taking calls, triaging what is urgent, scheduling the crew and keeping customers informed about where things stand.

What it needs

  • Calm and clear with people who are having a bad day about their house
  • Able to judge what needs someone today and what can be booked
  • Organised enough to keep three technicians scheduled sensibly
  • Comfortable following up rather than waiting to be chased

What you get

  • Central role in how the business actually runs, not an answering service
  • Local team and local customers rather than an anonymous queue
  • Opportunity to learn the trade side properly over time
  • Direct line to the owner on how scheduling should work

How to Introduce Yourself

Email info@sylvanlakeplumbers.ca with "Careers" and the role in the subject line. Include:

  • A short note on the kind of work you have actually been doing
  • Your resume, or simply a list of previous jobs with dates
  • Which of our towns you can reliably get to
  • A phone number and the best time to use it

Every application gets read. If there is a fit, expect a phone conversation first, then a day out with one of the crew before either side commits to anything — you should see the actual work before you take the job, and we should see how you are in somebody's house.

If nothing is posted, send it anyway. Applications are kept on file, and when a spot opens the first calls go to people who already introduced themselves.

Sylvan Lake Plumbers considers all applicants without regard to race, religious beliefs, colour, gender, gender identity, gender expression, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, family status or sexual orientation — the protected grounds under the Alberta Human Rights Act.
