Almost every call we get comes down to the same pair of questions. What is actually wrong, and is this worth repairing or has it reached the end? Most people can live with either answer. What they cannot stand is being handed a number without being told which one they are paying for.
So that is the order we work in. Find the fault, explain it in language you can repeat to your partner that evening, and lay out the realistic options — including the option where you do nothing for now, when that is genuinely defensible. You should be able to tell us to go away and think about it, and still be better informed than when we arrived.

Sylvan Lake First, Then Down the Highway
Sylvan Lake is home and it is where most of our work is. Beyond it we cover Red Deer, twenty minutes east, and Blackfalds and Lacombe up the QEII — close enough that a callback is a short drive rather than a scheduling problem.
The four are not the same job. Sylvan Lake has a large stock of seasonal and rental property that sits empty through the coldest months. Red Deer has the region's oldest housing and the plumbing that goes with it. Blackfalds is mostly newer builds under warranty. Lacombe is a mix of both, with some genuinely old houses in the core. What is likely to be wrong differs by address, and so does what we bring in the van.

Diagnosis before quotes
We tell you what is wrong and how we know before we tell you what it costs. A number with no explanation attached is not a quote, it is a guess you are being asked to fund.

Plenty of equipment we are called out to has years left. We will say so, even on a day when selling you a replacement would have been easier and considerably more profitable.

Boots off or covered, drop sheets down, and the old unit taken away with us. Your house should not look like a worksite after a half-day call.

Do you charge to come out and look?
Estimates on planned work — a replacement you are considering, a bathroom you are costing out — are free, and there is nothing to sign at the end of one. Diagnostic work on a fault is different: finding out why something has failed takes time and equipment, and we will tell you what that assessment costs when you book rather than surprising you with it at the door.
How fast can you get here?
It depends on the day and what the three of us are already committed to. Call rather than emailing if water is running or the heat is off in January — those get moved up the list, and the form is not monitored overnight. When we cannot get to you quickly enough we will say so on the phone instead of booking you in and hoping.
My water heater is leaking. What do I do right now?
Shut off the cold water supply into the tank, which is the valve on the pipe entering the top. If it is a gas unit, turn the control to off or pilot; if it is electric, switch off the breaker for it. Then call us. Doing those two things first is often the difference between a wet floor and a replaced floor.
Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?
That depends on age, what has failed, what it costs to put right, and what the rest of the unit looks like once it is open. A cheap fix on a unit with years left is obviously worth doing. A costly fix on something already near the end of its service life usually is not, and we would rather tell you that than take the repair money twice.
Do you work on lake properties that sit empty over winter?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do here. Seasonal properties fail differently from occupied ones — the damage happens with nobody in the building, so it is discovered late. Shutting one down properly for the winter and opening it back up in spring are both jobs worth doing rather than improvising.
